Days of Past/Present: “Then” is as Important as “Now”

Lessons in living and crisis communications … in two parts:past future

Part One: Every month we have a great group of independent PR counselors that meets for lunch (the PRSAGA IC group), always with a great topic of interest to the group. We share what works and what doesn’t. This month we were talking crisis communications, with insight from Terri Thorton (Thorton Communications), Joe Ledlie (The Ledlie Group) and Christian Boone (the Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Part Two:  I was listening to a senior karate Sensei this weekend talk about three stages of “being.” Not to get too mystical, but the point was that there’s that time before something happens, that time when it’s actually happening, and then the period when it’s past.

(… and then I heard that the trailer for the new X-Men movie, “Days of Future Past,” comes out this week.  Not so, much of a connection there, but it looks like a great movie!)

Anyway, the point that comes from all this is that the time before a crisis happens is as important, if not more, than when you’re actually in the crisis.  Why?  Well, the point is that if an organization doesn’t plan for potential crisis situations, then the crisis will be many times worse when it happens.

Our lunch panelists counseled pre-crisis planning in two parts. The first part consists of identifying potential crisis situations or issues. The second part gets into putting together a “process” that guides an organization’s crisis response.

Of course, if you can send Wolverine back in time to fix your mistakes, it makes it all a lot easier.
