REI Closing on Black Friday, Journalist Spotlight on

Dan Whisenhunt Decaturish 2

Dan Whisenhunt, Editor, Founder,

This week, our new Journalist Spotlight shines on Dan Whisenhunt and his Decatur-focused news site, Click here for all the detail on Atlanta Daybook.

The other interesting bit of news was from REI. If you haven’t heard, they’re paying their employees to take Black Friday off and “be outside.”

From a PR perspective it’s a great strategy.

  1. It’s created a great deal of awareness of REI.
  2. They’re encouraging employees to spend time outside which connects the announcement to their products and mission.
  3. From an internal communications / HR perspective it creates positive feelings among the company’s employees.

REI customers tend to be very loyal, so from a sales perspective, it’ll probably just shift sales to earlier in the week or the weekend after. The CEO of REI says it’ll cost them money, but I’m not sure if he’s talking short-term or long-term.  I’ve already heard from several people that this news caused a positive reaction resulting in a few on-line purchases.

What’s your take?
